10 Days to Africa
On March 5, I will fly out of Toronto to explore the next continent on the list. For forty days, I'll be waking up in a tent to an African sunrise, from the Serengeti to the Namib Desert, Dar es Salaam to Cape Town.
I cannot wait to see the open landscape of the plains in Tanzania, seeing the wildlife I have grown up already loving and wanting to understand (thank you, Lion King). Within the last few years, I have become fixated on the idea of the desert, in addition to my lifelong safari obsession. Last year's trip was originally conceptualized as a visit to Egypt and Jordan, quickly nixed by concerned loved ones who thought I should maybe let civil unrest settle down in that area. West Africa was concerned with Ebola, and the continent seemed like too big a stretch to appease those aforementioned loved ones for my first solo adventure.
But now, a year after an incredible and successful trip to Asia, it is time to see Africa.
I am most looking forward to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, where elephants, zebras, giraffes and lions make their lives. Victoria Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world, shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and as I'll be there during the wet season, it is sure to be roaring.
Originally when I began planning this trip, I looked into finishing at Livingstone. But then I started looking at Namibia and talking to friends who have been there, and now I am so glad I decided to stay a little longer and make it work. The Namib Desert boasts the highest sand dunes in the world, and is also the oldest, and it will make a spectacular desert-fix. And I get to camp there!
Traversing the continent like this, I'll be seeing vastly different ecosystems and species, from the great plains, to the island of Zanzibar; the Okavengo Delta, to the southern coast in Cape Town.
I imagine most of the blogging will have to take place when I return home, but hopefully I'll be able to send a few updates from the dirt road. Cannot wait to get back in the air!
