It is bittersweet to miss Thanksgiving this year while I am in Germany. My favourite holiday, best weekend of the year. I am selfishly soothed that at least the celebrations aren't going on without me, as much of the family is also on their way to Europe or here already.

While there will be no apple cider this October, no pumpkin pie, apple sauce, picking apples and pears in the cool day, I am still thankful this Thanksgiving.

I am thankful that Mom and Nonna will be meeting me in Berlin on Monday - perhaps we will track down some apple cider.

I am thankful to be spending this weekend with a friend in Munich, exploring his hometown with excellent company.

I am thankful to be able to take a few weeks off work after a hectic few months and have the means to cross the ocean.

I am thankful that English is my first language, but I also still have some French to help understand things in Belgium and Luxembourg.

I am thankful to be young and healthy enough to roam 20+km each day and still get out of bed each morning.

I am thankful to be a Canadian, and to tell people so when they ask, usually followed by "Toronto or Vancouver" as if there is no in between.

I am thankful to have secured an apartment for my return, and that I have a job (or two) to return to.

I am thankful to have a fall weekend planned with my friends when I get back so we can still appreciate the best month of the year together.

So we may not be crushing apples and baking numerous pies this year, but my favourite time of year will still be enjoyed and celebrated with loved ones, thousands of miles from Lakeview Farm.
