Pad Thai and Anok

Siem Reap, Cambodia

After a sunny day in Bangkok, I am now writing to you from country number two, Cambodia. Although it was a short excursion to Thailand, I really liked the feel of Bangkok.  After arriving to the hotel at 2 (circling the city for a while as the cab driver had no idea where it was, and we both struggled with the map I had), I took a quick shower to wash off two day of travel, and hit the streets in the direction of the Grand Palace.  I had too much fun exploring temples along the way that I arrived there just as it closed, but after seeing how crowded that area was with huge tourist groups, I was glad to have had some quiet time in the smaller temples.  A local showed me around one temple, making sure I saw all the highlights.

In the evening, the group met in the hotel.  There are 14 of us - 2 Kiwis, 4 Brits, 8 Australians, and me, the Canadian.  Seems like an excellent group of people, all traveling for a while to different places, most seeming to be in similar situations to me.

Today was a full day of travel across Thailand and into Cambodia. The two countries are entirely different, where it is noticeable that the latter is still rebuilding and developing after the Khmer Rouge Regime, whereas I was impressed with things like the road quality and traffic abidance in Thailand.  We stopped for our first Cambodian meal, anok - a curry-like dish with some sort of leaf similar to spinach.  After a long wait in line at customs, this evening we celebrated with another great meal, happy hour, an incredible live band at the restaurant, and a visit to a Cambodian club, called "The Temple".

Tomorrow is Angkor Wat, which I've been looking forward to most.  Hopefully pictures to follow soon!
