Lumbini, Nepal

In a short trip to Lumbini, we visited the birthplace of Buddha.  The whole town was surprisingly empty, considering what a religious pilgrimage it must be to come see the temples.  The complex was huge, with many temples from the Buddhist communities of other countries, all ornately decorated.  The main temple was built around old structures from 300-600 AD, with a stone in the middle marking the supposed exact location Buddha was born 10 months after a white elephant came to his mother in a dream, telling her she'd have a son.  There were massive trees behind the temple, draped with prayer flags crossing in every direction.  Monks were chanting in a circle, and others were meditating peacefully.

A group of us decided to walk back through town and explore the small community.  We stopped at a very local place for dinner and were lead into the very back by the kitchen, where the family and their neighbours were thrilled to have us.  We tried a bunch of new dishes, like freshly made vegetable mo mos, and a few rounds of beer.
