Wawa, Ontario to Thunder Bay, Ontario
So there are THREE giant geese in Wawa. And a sign saying "Wawa needs a new goose".
White River is the origin of Winnie the Black Bear's rise to fame, after she was found as a cub and later transported to England, where she enchanted Christopher and his father A.A. Milne.
It also calls itself " Canada's Coldest Spot" after a record low temperature read off a thermometer of -58 in January 1935, but apparently that's well below some of the other records. We'll let White River keep their sign.
Terrace Bay, whose grocery store is not open Sunday, leaving me without vegetables for another day, but redeemed itself with free WiFi throughout the town, and with the beautiful, semi-frozen Aguasabon Falls, accessible only by trekking through the remaining slushy snow.
I stayed at the Thunder Bay International Hostel, a funky little spot just outside the main city, with a cuddly resident cat and dog, and the proprietor Lloyd, friendly and forgetful, who seems to have built this beautiful space bit by bit over the years. After vaguely searching again for a place to buy some real food, unsuccessfully, I parked at the Silver Creek Conservation Area overlooking Lake Superior, saying goodbye to the rugged lake before branching north the next day.
