Road to Kathmandu

A very convoluted flight path will eventually bring me from Hanoi, Vietnam (15:45 on April 2) to Kathmandu, Nepal (8:50 on April 3) after 18 hours and 4,731 kms.  Backtrack to Bangkok and get a preview of Delhi.  Is this really the most efficient way to get there?
